AP: Left workers arrested near PM's meeting venue

Hyderabad, July 31: Police arrested more than 100 Left party leaders, MLAs and workers today when they attempted to proceed towards the venue of a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to review the state agriculture and infrastructure development programmes.

Police said leaders and workers of the CPI, CPM and New Democracy took out a procession from the Old MLA quarters, demanding that the government take action against the police officials involved in the Mudigonda police firing and order a judicial probe by a sitting High Court Judge into the incident.

Police forces deployed at the city police commissioner's office cordoned off the route and stopped protesters from marching towards Jubilee hall, the venue of the Prime Minister's meeting with Union and state ministers and the officials concerned on agriculture and infrastructure development.

Those arrested were taken to the Goshamahal police stadium.

Meanwhile, security was stepped up further at the venue and surrounding areas to prevent any untoward incident.

The Prime Minister, who arrived in the city last night on a one-day official tour is participating in a meeting to review the development programmes taken up by the state government.
