Flood situation steadying in Asom

Guwahati, Jul 31 (UNI) The flood situation in Asom was gradually steadying though the overall scenario continued to be grim.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi assured of all relief to the affected people and claimed that food items and medicines were in adequate stock in all parts to handle the situation.

Water showed receding signs at various places, though the rivers flowed above the danger level across the state. As many as 24 districts of the total 27 had been affected in this second wave of flood this monsoon.

The Brahmaputra continued to flow above the red mark here and in Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Tezpur and Dhubri, besides at several other places in the 850-km course throughout the state.

The Burhidehing river was flowing precariously close to its Highest Flood Level (HFL) at 103.71 mt at Khowang in Dibrugarh district.

The Beki was also flowing close to its HFL at 45.79 mt in Barpeta district.

Other important tributaries of the Brahmaputra, including the Subansiri, Desang, Dhansiri, Jiabharali, Kopili, Puthimari, Pagladiya, Beki and Sankosh, continued to flow above the red mark in North Lakhimpur, Sibsagar, Golaghat, Sonitpur, Nagaon, Kamrup, Nalbari and Barpeta districts.

Water had receded at most of the places on the National Highway, and traffic was moving normally.
