Flood situation deteriorates, toll touches 63

Patna, July 31 (UNI) The Flood situation in Bihar deteriorated further as embankments of several rivers were breached inundating fresh areas in several districts, while the toll due to flood fury touched 63 today.

According to reports from Samastipur, flood water of the Kosi and the Bagmati rivers entered 23 panchayats in Bithan Sindhiya and Kalyanpur block, while one person was swept away at Shahpur village in the district, taking the toll to 63 in the state so far.

Earlier, 62 deaths were reported from various parts of the state in flood during the monsoon this year.

District Magistrate of Samastipur Dr N Shrawan said the Kosi and the Bagmati rivers were maintaining the rising trend, while the vulnerable portions of the embankments on these rivers were being kept under strict vigil by various teams of engineers and other technical personnel.

Rescue and relief operation had been stepped up in the worst-hit areas of the district, he added.
