Mumbai, July 31 (UNI) The members of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and the administration are at loggerheads over the pay hike of the workers with the members of the committee demanding a pay hike of Rs 1,500 for the workers which is being vehemently opposed by the administration.

The workers of the BEST, who draw a salary less than Rs 18,000, will be given a pay hike of Rs 1,500 from next month onwards if the same is cleared by the BEST administration.

The proposal was presented today in a meeting of the BEST committee members, who supported it unanimously.

The revised pay structure, if passed will be made till the pay revision of the workers is implemented by the administration.

BEST Committee Chairman Sanjay Potnis said, ''The decision was taken keeping in mind the pay revision that has been delayed. The welfare of the workers was kept in mind before passing the decision, and the opposition leaders supported the decision.'' Congress corporator and BEST committee member, Ravi Raja said, ''The workers have been demanding a pay revision for a long time and since a decision could not be reached at, this interim relief has been given to the workers.'' Uttam Khobragade, the General Manager of the BEST undertaking said, ''The increase is not possible as the financial structure of the undertaking does not permit it.'' He added, ''I had recommended a hike of Rs 1,000, but the members are insisting on Rs 1,500 which is not possible at this juncture.'' UNI JN KU SKB2321
