Almorea gets its first Nagarpalika Chairman
Dehradun, July 31 (UNI) Almora Nagarpalika in Uttarakhand state got its first woman chairman in 143 years when Congress candidate Shobha Joshi defeated BJP candidate Ajit Karki by 1464 votes in Palika by-election.
The Election was held on July 28. After the counting concluded yesterday Election Officer and District Magistrate Nidhimani Tripathy declared Ms Joshi a winner.
Ms Joshi recieved 4298 votes wehile 2834 voters voted for Mr Karki. Out of the total 19398 electors only 7195 had exercised their franchise. About 63 votes were declared illegal. The Chairman's seat had fallen vacant following the death of Vijay Joshi, the husband of Ms Joshi in February this year.
Almora Nagarpalika was formed in 1864 and the first general election held in 1952. By winning the seat Ms Joshi has become the first woman to occupy the Chairman's seat in the Palikas 143 years of history.
