Aiyar inaugurates NEC Sectoral Summit

Kohima, July 31 (UNI) Union Minister of Department of North Eastern States(DoNER) and the Chairman of the North Eastern Council (NEC) Mani Shankar Aiyar today said northeast should benefit from their close proximity with the South East Asian countries.

Inaugurating the two-day long '7th NEC Sectoral Summit on IT, IT Enabled Services and Telecommunication' at the Nagaland Secretariat Complex here this afternoon, Mr Aiyar said the entire North Eastern Region is richer than any other part of the country in terms of mineral deposit, forest resources among others.

With an aim to explore a worldwide market for the wealth of the region, the Centre had taken to the Look East Policy and efforts are on to join with Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand by road and closer ties.

He also assured that the Union Government is taking steps to introduce ''Dedicated Airlines'' to the region by linking all states and trying to introduce at least 500 flights to the region in a week.

Nagaland Governor K Sankaranarayanan said that he is the Governor of such a state where there is no scope of development in the IT sector, neither are there any Medical or Engineering Colleges, although in other states like Kerala there are 36 Engineering colleges, including private ones.

He appealed to the DoNER Minister to grant at least one Engineering College for Nagaland to become functional from this year onwards.

Nagaland Chief Mnister Neiphiu Rio presented various difficulties by the state, while Ms Sushma Singh, Secretary, DoNER, highlighted on the various projects of IT, IT Enabled Services and Telecommunication to the North Eastern states.
