UP floods claim 10 lives; flood situation in Asom grim

New Delhi, July 30 (UNI) Ten more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours in Uttar Pradesh in rainfall-related incidents, as floods in Asom continued to wreak misery and havoc on lakhs of people.

With 10 more deaths, the toll in UP reached 41 so far.

The flood situation in the state was bleak with almost 20 districts facing the maximum brunt.

Major rivers, including Ghagra, Shardha, Rapti, Kuano and Kathnaiyan have caused havoc in the eastern and central parts of UP.

The flood water had even entered Dhudhwa National Park in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Altogether 15 people lost their lives in floods in Asom, with the situation being same in upper Asom and worsening in central and lower regions of the state.

Flood water overflowed the national highways at several parts of the state, including NH 31, which serves as the main supply link to the entire North East.

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries were flowing over the danger level across the state, with incessant rainfall in the state and water from neighbouring Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh further aggravating the situation.

The Brahmaputra continued to flow over the red mark in several places, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Goalpara and Tezpur.

As fresh areas continued to be submerged in lower Asom, Barpeta and Bajali sub-divisions of Barpeta district were affected. A two-year old child drowned in Balapara Kirkira village of Barpeta sub-division.

The Puthimari river continued to play havoc in Kamrup district, with a teenager washed away by the river yesterday. The river had also overtopped the NH 31 at several places.

Floods in Bihar claimed 15 lives since the past week and the entire Darbhanga district was cut off.

Thirteen people died since the past one week in Muzaffarpur district where the situation further deteriorated following breach in the embankment of Tirhut canal.

Meanwhile, flood water continued to play havoc in Darbhanga district where about 14 lakh people were marooned.

The flood water also swept away two people in the district during the past one week.

Some 50 girls of the State Backward Class Girls Residential High School remained trapped in their establishment as four-feet-deep water swirled around it.
