TN to modernise Cauvery Delta irrigation facilities

Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu), July 30: The state government proposes to take up several schemes, including a Rs 400 crore proposal, for modernising irrigation facilities in the Cauvery Delta Region, according to PWD Minister Durai Murugan.

During a meeting last evening with PWD officials and farmers, the Minister said the PWD had already taken up several schemes costing Rs 20 crore for improving the irrigation facilities.

Some other proposals include upgradation of tanks and drip irrigation in GA Canal Area of Pattukottai at a cost of Rs 147.50 crore and Rs 200 crore scheme for strengthening river banks of Coleroon river with financial assistance from NABARD.

In his address, Cooperation Minister Ko Si Mani said the government had already provided Rs 50 crore to cooperative banks for disbursement to farmers.

Some of the participants urged the government to take suitable steps for implementation of Cauvery River Protection Scheme to ensure water supply to delta farmers.
