Shelving titanium project, a victory for AIADMK: Jaya
Chennai, July 30 (UNI) The DMK Government's decision to shelve the controversial Titanium di-oxide project by Tata Steel, was a major victory for the AIADMK and the people of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli, AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa claimed today.
In a statement here, she said a day after she announced that she would personally lead an agitation against the implementation of the project, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced the dropping of the project.
''This is a major victory for the AIADMK and the will power expressed by the local people and farmers of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts,'' she said.
The AIADMK had once again proved that it would be working for the welfare of the people, whether it was in power or in the opposition, she said.
Ms Jayalalithaa said that during the previous AIADMK regime, a MoU was signed with the Tatas for a Techno Commercial Feasibility Study for the project, but she denied permission after realising that the project would hit the livelihood of the people and cause environmental hazards.
