Self-financing college does a volte face

Chennai, July 30 (UNI) After waging a legal battle with the Tamil Nadu Government, Self-Financing Chettinad Medical College has offered to surrender 65 per cent of seats to the Government, to be filled up under the Government quota.

The college, which challenged the State Government order, directing self financing professional colleges to surrender 65 per cent seats to the Government (in case of non-minority), obtained a favourable order in the Supreme Court.

After the apex court had said the college need not surrender its seats to the Government, the State Government, which selected students through counselling, could not allot the students seats in this college.

Meanwhile, in a sudden development, the college, after initiating a dialogue with the Government, changed its decision and offered to surrender 65 per cent seats.

The college management had sent a letter to the Government, informing that the Government could fill up 65 per cent of seats based on reservation. Students, who were already selected and alloted this college, could join this year, an official release here said.

It may be also recalled that the Government had launched a crackdown on colleges, which collected capitation fees for admission and exorbitant tuition fees, and the Chettinad Medical College was one of the colleges which came under the scanner.
