PDP ended dark era of opportunist politics in J
Srinagar, July 30 (UNI) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said Jammu and Kashmir today needs a responsive and considerate leadership that not only voices the just concerns and aspirations of the people forcefully but also ensures the political, economic and social stability of the state.
''The PDP has shown the commitment to stand by the side of the people and at the same time pursue its pro-public agenda with unflinching obligation bringing about an overall qualitative improvement in their ground situation,'' she said.
Addressing the PDP's Foundation Day function at Badgam, Ms Mufti said even within the given constraints, the party worked for relief, succour, development and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue ensuring unparalleled progress on these fronts.
''Our greatest achievement is that not only have we set a people-oriented agenda for peace and prosperity, but also gave a new credible direction to the state's political scenario,'' she added.
Ms Mufti said with the descent of the PDP on the state's political scene in 1999 ended a dark era of exploitative and opportunist politics that had been the hallmark of all predecessors.
The greatest strength of the PDP was the people who have provided it the much-needed moral support in all its endeavours, she added.
''And I assure you, we will never let you down come what may.'' The PDP chief blamed the National Conference leadership of once again trying to play filthy politics over troop reduction and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) issues.
The recent statements of the NC leaders have made it amply clear that they were out to sabotage any move aimed at ensuring relief to the people, she added.
Ms Mufti alleged that the NC leadership, for its mean political interests, was ''conniving overtly and covertly'' to sabotage the process of troop reduction and AFSPA revocation.
''But I assure you, we will not allow them to succeed in their nefarious designs. Whether in or outside the power, the NC has never represented the interests and aspirations of the people, but always looked toward Delhi for blessings,'' she added.
Even as the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah acted and asserted more as the head of the Unified Command than a public representative and today his son was playing the same trick by advocating that troop reduction and AFSPA revocation should be left to the Unified Command and not the government, the PDP president added.
