EC teams in Gujarat to check electoral rolls

New Delhi, July 30 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) has sent six teams to Gujarat to check the various aspects of the electoral rolls in the state.

According to EC sources, each team comprising two members, will visit all the 25 districts in the State begining today.

The team is expected to complete its work by August 6, the sources added.

Polling for the 181 constituencies in the state is likely to be held before December 26.

The number of voters in Gujarat has increased by 9.7 per cent as per the final electoral rolls publised by the Election Commission.

According to final rolls, number of male electors increased to 187,66,073 in 2007 from 170,66,434 in 2004. Number of female voters also increased to 177,04,475 from 161,71,762.

Election Commission sources said the increase in voters -- from 332,28,196 in 2002 to 364,70,548 in 2007 -- was more than 32.33 lakh.

The 2002 elections were held in the backdrop of Godhra riots and heavy polling was held with 204,55,166 voters exercising their franchise. The polling percentage was 61.54.
