Arjun denies charge of dowry harassment

New Delhi, July 30: Veteran Congress leader and Union Minister Arjun Singh today asserted that he had nothing to do with the allegation of harassment of his grandson's wife for dowry.

Even as Uttar Pradesh police have registered a dowry harassment case against him, his wife and five other members of the family, he sought to distance himself from the allegations.

Mr Singh told CNN-IBN television channel that he did not even attend the wedding of his grandson one-and-a half years ago in protest against his opinion being "sidelined" at the wedding.

"I have nothing to do with it. My opinion was sidelined at the wedding," he said.

Reacting to the allegation, the Congress Party said 'let us wait for the process...the case is now only at the FIR level." "Union Minister is also a human being,' AICC Spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi told mediapersons when asked whether the party would take any action as the person involved was a Union Cabinet Minister, that too in a dowry harassment case.

Uttar Pradesh police has registered a case under Anti-Dowry Act has been against Mr Singh, his wife Beena Singh, son Abhimanyu Singh, grandson Abhijeet Singh and three others.

The case was registered on the direction of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandausi, on a complaint by Madhvendra Singh, father of Priyanka Singh whom Abhimanyu married.

Madhvendra Singh has alleged that Priyanka's in-laws had been demanding a Mercedes car and a flat in Noida from him and his daughter was being tortured when their demand was not met.
