CPI, CPI(M), TDP stage dharna before Khammam Collectorate

Hyderabad, July 29 (UNI) A tense situation prevailed in Khammam district as the CPI, CPI(M) and TDP activists staged a dharna before the Khammam Collectorate today, with the bodies of the victims killed in yesterday's police firing.

The situation worsened further when Opposition TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu visited the village.

Meanwhile, the bandh called by the Opposition parties in Khammam district to condemn the police firing was total.

Following the police firing, the Government had ordered a judicial inquiry into the whole episode, transferred the District Superintendent of Police (DSP), suspended the Additional SP, Circle Inspector and Sub-Inspector, who were responsible for the incident.

Though the Government announced an ex gratia payment of Rs five lakh and a job to next of kin of the deceased, the Opposition demanded an ex gratia of Rs ten lakh and suspension of all police officials concerned.

They also demanded filing of murder cases against those who actually fired, a job and a house for the families of the victims.

The government has already promised to provide a house to those who did not have a house.

CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechuri and CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta would visit Mudigonda village today. They were expected to submit a report to their respective party leadership on the incident.

Meanwhile, Mr Naidu demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs one lakh to the family members of the victims from his party fund.
