State govt to decide on restricting illegal private transport

Kolhapur, July 28 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil today said the State government would soon decide on restricting the 'vadap' private transport operation to stop its illegal practice.

Talking to reporters at the Ujalaiwadi Aerodrome on the city's outskirts, Mr Patil said he had discussed the issue with State Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

As per information with government, 'vadap' operation has increased in State with support from police and Road Transport Officials (RTO) officials, who accept 'hapta' (bribe) from private operators to allow them run the service, Mr Patil said and added that such things were occurring due to deficiencies in traffic control system.

Due to these deficiences, the percentage of accidents has increased and hence there is a need to restrict the illegal system for the betterment of the society and the people.

Mr Patil, who is State Home minister, said that there was an increase in dacoity cases and as such annually the number stands at about 650 in the State. He said the police have succeeded in successfully ivestigating the incidents and arrested about 30 dacoits and recovering 40 per cent of the stolen goods.

The sugar industry is presently passing through a bad phase in the State as sugar retes have fallen in the world market and even so because of surplus sugarcane crop in the State, he said adding that the government was actively considering on finding a way to bail out the industry from the crisis.
