Police lathicharge students of girls college, 5 injured
Mahishadal, July 28 (UNI) Police today lathicharged on more than 50 students of Mahishadal Girls' College, after they gheraoed the principal's office.
Five students were seriously injured in the lathicharge and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The students 'gheraoed' (Encircled) Principal Krishna Saha for more than 23 hours, police said adding that she was rescued by the police in an unconscious state and was admitted to a private nursing home here.
The students, backed by the TMC-led student's union, gheraoed the principal yesterday in her office protesting the 'abrupt increase' in the admission fees and hostel charges.
They also protested the 'donation' system for admission in some non-traditional courses.
Earlier, the students complained about unauthorised entry of some outsiders into the college premises.
Tamalika Panda Seth, the MLA from Mahishadal, is the president of the governing body of the college.
The principal said she was not in a position to reduce the college fees without the permission of the governing body.
