One killed, 7 Pak infiltrators arrested,major tragedy averted in J

Srinagar, July 28 (UNI) Security forces arrested seven Pakistani infiltrators, averted a major tragedy and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, while militants killed one and injured a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir, overnight.

Security forces guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from PoK in Karnah sector, an official spokesman said.

He said when challenged, the infiltrators turned themselves in before the security forces. They surrendered one pistol, four magazines, 25 rounds of ammunition, two mobile chargers, one SIM chard and Rs 3,460 Pak currency.

They were identified as Alam Bhat, his wife Mehfooza Bibi, Asher Bhat, his son Yasir Bhat, Amina Bhat, Toiba and Suriya Bibi, a resident of POK.

More than 100 militants and their families had surrendered before the security forces on the LoC after their return from PoK during the past two years.

About 60 others were killed in different encounters with security forces, after they sneaked into this side from PoK since January this year.

Defence Minister Mr A K Antony, who visited some fowards posts yesterday, said the infiltration from across the border was going on, though the situation within the valley has improved.

Jammu and Kashmir police today averted a major tragedy, when they detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted by militants in north Kashmir to target security forces.

A police spokesman said a police party during a routine patrolling noticed an IED planted by militants at Tulibal, Sopore, about 50 km from here in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.

The area was immediately sealed off and all those present were taken to safer places.

Later, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) defused the IED without causing any damage.

Meanwhile, police arrested a militant of Pakistan based Lashkar- e-Toiba (LeT) Tariq Ahmad Shala alongwith one hand grenade at Amargarh, Sopore.

He said militants shot dead a 28-year-old Noor Mohammad Dar at Shahgund in Ganderbal district last night.

A police constable was injured in an encounter with militants at Bala Kothi in Kishtwar district of Jammu region today. Militants later managed to escape, he said.

He said security forces recovered two AK rifles, six magazines, one UBGL, three hand grenades, and one wireless set from the house of one Mohammad Akbar Dar at Sumbal.
