NGO to organise "Walkathon-2007" rally on Aug 4
Chennai, July 28 (UNI) National Network For Organ Sharing, a Chennai-based Non-Government Organisation will organise a ''Walkathon-2007'' rally at Marina Beech here on August 4, to mark the World Organ Donor Week.
Addressing a press conference here, the organisers said Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Roy Rathore will flag off the rally near the Triumph of Labour Statue at 0900 hrs. PWC Davidar Special Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare and Cine Actor Vivek will participate in the concluding function.
Dr Mohan Thanikachalam said India's record in diseased organ transplantation was dismal comparing to other countries like USA.
One of the reason for this was the lack of public awareness and that is why the NGO has undertaken the rally to create awareness about the issue.
He said the rally will create awareness among the public about the issues like brain death, organ donation, transplantation and new life to persons with end-stage organ disease.
Replying on a query on the ehtical aspect of the organ transplantation from a person affected by brain death, he said brain death was irreversible loss of brain function and a brain dead person was clinically and legally dead. Ethically there was nothing wrong in transplanting organs from a brain dead person.
