Srinagar, July 28 (UNI) The state-of-the-art 15-bedded Paediatric Wing (PW) at the District Hospital, constructed at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore, was inaugurated and dedicated to the people of Handwara in north Kashmir by Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta today.

The PW is equipped with the latest medical equipment that could be utilised for new-born children as well as for other patients also.

The PW at the District hospital was constructed and made ready with modern medical amenities in a record time of one year.

This ward is a symbol of the Navy's efforts to pay homage and immortalise the memory of the 21 children who lost their lives after a navy boat overturned in Wullar Lake on May 30, 2006.

The foundation stone of the paediatric ward was laid by then Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash on October 15 last year.

As many as 20 students, in the age group of 7-14 years and two staff members of the Burning Candle School, Handwara, drowned while ferrying in a navy boat in Wullar Lake, Asia's largest fresh water reservoir ironically known for its sweet contents, during an excursion on May 30 last year.

On this occasion, Admiral Mehta handed over the documents of the hospital to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Addressing the gathering, Admiral Mehta mentioned that the idea to build the hospital had emerged while interacting with the people of Handwara after the accident.

He stated that even though the loss of innocent lives was irreplaceable, a facility such as this would be a befitting tribute to the memory of the children.

He expressed hope that the hospital would help provide quality medical care to the people of Handwara and nearby localities.

Mr Azad expressed similar sentiments and added that action against the guilty responsible for this accident would be taken at an early date.
