Meghalaya flood:70 villages affected, 5 bodies recovered

Shillong, Jul 28 (UNI) About 70 villages in the western region of Meghalaya are reeling under water, as rescuers recovered five bodies of the eight swept away by a lanslip, trigerred by monsoon rain.

So far, nine people have been feared dead due to lanslides.

Road and telecommunication in the plain belts -- Mahendragnj, Phulbari, Garobadha, Rajabala and other villages in West Garo Hills district remained cut off as major rivers and tributaries were in spate due to monsoon rain, official sources said.

Major rivers Ganol and Simsang are said to be swelling further, while several landslides occurred in several places of the district.

District Deputy Commissioner P Sampath Kumar told UNI over phone from Tura that the government had sounded a general alert to people residing in the plain belt areas and especailly near the river basins to come to high grounds to ensure that there was no loss of live.

He informed that the government had also set up relief camps in those affected areas.

Meanwhile, Mr Kumar said five bodies were recovered today from the downstream areas. The victims were swept away by a major landslide at Rishipara near Nakham Baazar.

''Rescue teams are still on the job to rescue the others despite heavy downpour,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the state government may seek financial assistance for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected by landslide and flashflood.

Expressing concern over the loss of life, Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the district disaster management team was in action and taking preventive measures.

Dr Sangma said the government had instructed all Block Development Officers to be at their respective stations to monitor the situation and assess the quantum of damage to the life and the property of the people.
