Court dismisses complaint against UPA members

New Delhi, July 28 (UNI) A city court today dismissed a complaint filed by a lawyer to register an FIR against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan, and others who had joined a treat hosted at Ashoka Hotel on July 17.

One Ravinder Kumar, a practising advocate, and also the national president of Rashtriya Mukti Morcha of Angad Nagar extension, Delhi, filed a complaint in Patiala House Court regarding the registration of an FIR against the said persons on the allegations that they had committed offence under sections 171(E), 34 of IPC by treating hundreds of persons who were electors in the recent Presidential poll.

Mr Kumar had also made a complaint before the Chief Election Commissioner of India on July 17 regarding registration of an FIR against the said persons that they had committed offence by providing a bribe to the voters by hosting a dinner at the hotel on July 17 to introduce and request for their votes for Ms Pratibha Patil in the ensuing Presidential election held on July 19.

The Metropolitan Magistrate dismissed the complaint on the basis of maintainability as provided under Article 71 of Constitution of India which defines that doubts and disputes in connection with the election of the President or Vice President will be decided by the Supreme Court of India.
