Chennai, July 28 (UNI) All India Anna DMK (AIADMK) General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today threatened a massive agitation if the Tamil Nadu government failed to prevent Kerala from constructing a new dam near Mullaperiyar.

In a statement here, Ms Jayalalithaa, referring to reports in the media, said the Kerala government was keen on building a new dam and demanded that the DMK government initiate urgent measures to prevent it.

She suggested that the state government immediately move the Supreme Court, seeking a direction to restrain Kerala from building a dam, which would be detrimental to the interest of the people of the state.

If the DMK Government failed to take steps to secure justice to the people of Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK would organise a massive agitation, she said.

She said even after the Supreme Court directed the Tamil Nadu Governemnt to raise the water level in Mullaperiyar dam from the existing 136 ft to 142 ft, the government remained silent.

Meanwhile, Kerala Irrigation Minister N K Premachandran had told the media that the government would start the work with regard to the building of a new dam and finalise the project report within six months.
