Youth must take interest in Parliamentary democracy: Patil

New Delhi, Jul 27 (UNI) Minister of State for Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs Suryakanta Patil today called the younger generation to play an important role in checking people's indifferent attitude towards democratic institutions.

Distributing the prizes to the winners of Youth Parliament Competition, Ms Patil said that by taking interest in the working of parliamentary democracy and by gathering knowledge about its procedures and conventions, youth could sustain the democratic temper and processes of the nation.

''The 'youth Parliament Competitions' have helped the student community of our country to inculcate the habits of disciplined social behaviour, qualities of leadership, awareness of social problems and the democratic means of solving them,'' she said.

The prizes to the winners of the 41st Youth Parliament Competition, 2006-2007 for the schools under Directorate of Education and NDMC were given away. The students of Government Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Moti Nagar, bagged the first prize. The winning team also presented a short sitting of 'Youth Parliament.

''The 'Youth Parliament Competitions' have drawn praise from one and all who have witnessed them. The quality of the performances has only improved with each passing year,'' Ms Patil said.

Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs Rekha Bhargava said the primary objective of organizing the Youth Parliament Competitions was to educate the student community about the functioning of parliamentary institutions and the rules of procedures of Parliament. The Youth Parliament Competition provides the students a platform to learn these parliamentary virtues and nuances which are so necessary for a legislator to be successful.

Trophy for the best educational district in the competition was awarded to the West-A Educational District, Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi and Trophy for standing first among new entrant schools was bagged by Government Girls Sr. Sec.

School, No. 2, Najafgarh, New Delhi. Merit Trophies were awarded to eight schools for their meritorious performance in the competition.

31 schools took part in this year's competition.

Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs have been organising Youth Parliament Competitions in the schools under the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi and NDMC every year since 1966. In 1978, Kendriya Vidyalayas situated in and around Delhi were incorporated in the competition along with Delhi schools.

The Youth Parliament Scheme aims at promoting among the younger generation the spirit of self-discipline, tolerance of diverse opinion, righteous expression of views and other virtues of democratic way of life. It also acquaints the students with the practices and procedures of Parliament, techniques of discussion and debate and develops in them the qualities of leadership.
