Govt tells SC will check unsolicited calls from September
New Delhi, July 27 (UNI) The Centre today informed the Supreme Court that it will implement from September 5 this year its policy allowing mobile phone users to get their mobile numbers registered to avoid unsolicited calls.
The assurance was given by the government to a bench comprising Justices A K Mathur and Dalveer Bhandari during the hearing of a PIL filed by one Harsh Pathak.
The petitioner in his petition had contended that unsolicited calls on mobile phones were becoming a menace and there was no check on companies, indulging in tele-marketing. The petitioner also prayed to the apex court to ban such unsolicited calls.
The government informed the court today that if a company or any individual found making such calls they will be penalised first time and the phone number of the caller may be disconnected on second or third such instances. The government order to this effect will be implemented from September 5.
The court adjourned the hearing till September 21.
