Congress to make all legal efforts to sustain its govt in Goa
New Delhi, July 27 (UNI) The Congress today said it would make every legal and legitimate effort to ensure the survival of its 50-day-old government led by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat in Goa.
''The political developments in Goa happened yesterday. We have the weekend ahead. We hope things will stabilise by Monday,'' AICC spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi told mediapersons here today.
Asked if the Congress party would prefer imposition of President's rule in Goa in the light of the present political crisis caused by the resignation of a party rebel from the state Assembly and withdrawal of support by two MLAs of a coalition partner, Dr Singhvi said ''that would be precisely jumping the gun.'' Asked what would be the fate of the Kamat government, he said ''there is a constitutional process which includes different options, including a floor test and President's rule. However, it is for the Speaker and the Governor to take a decision.'' ''The constitutional process will take its own course. We will have to wait for the process...It is not for us to fish in troubled waters,'' Dr Singhvi added.
Meanwhile, AICC General Secretary in charge of party affairs in Goa Margaret Alva said the party was hopeful of the Kamat government stabilising by Monday, and accused the BJP of ''engineering'' a political crisis and being 'hands-in-glove with the land lobby and huge vested interests which had been trying to destabilise'' the 50-day-old dispensation.
''Our government will not collapse...We have numbers in our favour. We will stabilise by Monday,'' she said.
