Women can enter Sree Krishna Temple wearing churidar
Guruvayoor, Kerala, July 26 (UNI) Women can now enter the famed Sree Krishna Temple here by wearing churidar, but the traditional Kerala dhoti was still compulsory for men.
The Guruvayoor Devaswom Authorities today took the decision to allow women wearing churidar to enter the temple from tomorrow in view of the inconvenience caused to many, especially those visiting the temple from Northern parts of the country.
''There is a long-pending demand from women that they should be allowed to enter the temple wearing churidars, apart from traditional saree and skirts.
The temple governing body unanimously decided to meet their genuine demand,'' Devaswam Board Chairman Thottathil Ravindran told UNI.
The temples authorities had noted the inconvenience caused to the pilgrims from other states, as they could not enter the temple wearing such dress.
Mr Ravindran said all members and the temple thanthri had participated in the meeting and there was no difference of opinion in this regard.
Before taking a final decision in this regard, the temple authorities had discussed the matter with Hindu religious scholars and chief priests, he said and added they also supported the Devaswam's view.
However, men wearing pants would not be allowed to enter temple, he added.
According to the tradition so far, women were allowed to go inside the Sree Krishna Temple in sarees and the new dress code would be a great relief to them, he said.
