Varanasi, July 26 (UNI) Volunteers of the Ram Janaki Mandir in this temple city today staged demonstrations against the bid of health officials to slaughter a sacred bull in South-West Wales.

Led by temple priest Ram Kamal Das Vedanti, the volunteers burnt the effigy of Wales authorities for attempting to slaughter the bull 'Shambo' diagnosed to be suffering with bovine tuberculosis.

Later, students at a Sanskrit Gurukul run by Dharma Sangh Shiksha Seva Mandal organised special prayers and 'Yajna' to pray for the safety of the six-yer-old bull of the Skana Vale temple in Llanpumsaint.

Led by secretary of the Mandal Jajitan Pandey the Gurukul students also put a 'tilak' on the forehead of another bull at the Gurukul to offer symbolic prayers for 'Shambo.' Health officials were thwarted in their first bid to remove a sick but sacred bull for slaughter earlier in the day, when Hindu monks demanded a warrant from them to enter their temple in south-west Wales.

A veterinary official and two police officers will now return with the proper papers to the Skanda Vale temple in Llanpumsaint where six-year-old Shambo has been kept since it tested positive for bovine tuberculosis in May.

The Welsh Assembly Government in Cardiff insists the six-year-old Friesian must be put down after testing positive for the condition.
