Railways' freight revenue up 9.41 per cent

New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) Sustaining its north-bound tempo, the Railways generated Rs.10896.61 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the first quarter of the current fiscal as compared to Rs 9959.49 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 9.41 per cent.

The Railways carried 185.25 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-June this year as compared to 175.84 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 5.35 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 116880 million during April-June 2006 to 119870 million during April-June this year, an increase of 2.56 per cent.

The earnings from freight traffic during June this year were Rs 3539.97 crore as compared to Rs 3267.37 crore during the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 8.34 per cent.

The Railways carried 60.46 million tonnes (MTs) of freight traffic during the month as compared to 58.17 million tonnes of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 3.94 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 37746 million during June 2006 to 38877 million during the month this year, an increase of three per cent.

Of the total earnings during June this year, Rs 1352.45 crore came from transportation of 26.22 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 296.12 crore from 5.97 million tonnes of cement, Rs 292.60 crore from 3.05 million tonnes of foodgrains and Rs 244.29 crore from 3.62 million tonnes iron ore for exports.

In addition, it earned Rs 250.31 crore from transportation of 2.85 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 166.27 crore from 1.52 million tonnes of iron and steel for steel plants, Rs 146.32 crore from 4.16 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants, Rs 176.40 crore from 2.97 million tonnes of fertilisers and Rs 615.21 crore from 10.10 million tonnes of other goods.
