Chandigarh, July 26 (UNI) The Punjab Government has upgraded the 577 km historic Guru Gobind Singh Marg from Sri Anandpur Sahib to Talwandi Sabo as State Highway No One.

A decision to this effect was taken by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at a meeting with PWD Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa held here this morning.

The Chief Minister said the entire route of 577 km would be upgraded by widening the road to at least 5.5 meters to ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

The Chief Minister directed the SGPC authorities to depute its Secretary to coordinate with the PWD to provide basic inputs and background about the historical sites on the route to enable the department to put up reflective boards depicting brief history along with painted photographs about these sites for the information of general public. Mr Badal also mentioned that aesthetically designed bold milestones along this route would be re-installed.

Mr Badal said that he would take up the matter with the chief ministers of other states to declare the route on which the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh, travelled in their respective states as 'Guru Gobind Singh Marg' upto Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib, Nanded, Maharastra.

PWD Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa explained that some portions of the historic Guru Gobind Singh Marg were link roads or district roads, now all these portions would be formed part of the state highway and would be developed on a uniform pattern.

Mr Dhindsa said the route on which Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji travelled from Talwandi Sabo to Nanded Sahib was being identified from various agencies like SGPC, historians and Survey of India Maps. This exercise was being done in the department and shortly the project report would be finalised in consultation with other states, he added.
