Orissa MLAs demand action to minimise accidents

Bhubaneswar, Jul 26 (UNI) Concerned over the rising incidents of road accidents in Orissa, more than 25 MLAs cutting across party lines have demanded the government to initiate preventive measures.

In a letter to State Transport and Commerce Minister Jayanarayan Mishra, the Members said everyday nearly seven people were killed and 30 injured in accidents in the state due to non-implementation or slackness in implementing the Motor Vehicles Act by the implementing authorities.

The MLAs said road accidents in the state were rising alarmingly with as high as 2390 people killed in accidents this year compared to 1029 during 2004-2005.

The state capital had also reported 423 causalities this year till June last as against 246 registered in 2004-2005, the letter said and urged the Minister to fix speed limit for all vehicles in the accident-prone National Highways and conduct 24 hours patrolling.

They also demanded installation of radar to identify guilty drivers, setting up of special courts for speedy disposal ofaccidents cases, strict action against drunken drivers and non-issuance of road permits to 15-year-old commercial vehicles.
