No central intervention in TN capitation fee issue:Arjun Singh
New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) The Centre will not intervene in Tamil Nadu on the issue of some private engineering and medical colleges fleecing the students, charging capitation fees and taking donations, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said today.
Talking to reporters after calling on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here, Mr Arjun Singh said education was basically a state subject.
The Centre would intervene only if the concerned states wanted it, the Minister said, replying to questions.
The Centre was, however, ready to amend laws relating to education, if the state so desired, he said.
Replying to a question on the problems that had arisen from granting deemed university status to the Salem Periyar educational institution, he said the centre would resolve it soon.
Asked about the difficulties over the implementation of the Centre's announcement granting classical language status to Tamil, Mr Arjun Singh said he would clarify the issue on August 18 when he would visit Tamil Nadu.
He described his meeting with Mr Karunanidhi as a courtesy call.
