IT Dept makes special arrangements for tax payers

Pune, July 26 (UNI) The Income Tax department here has made special arrangements, like setting up of tax preparers counters, for assessees to file their income tax returns, the last date for which is July 31.

Income Tax Commissioner Raj Kumar told reporters that no extension in the date will be given. To avoid the last minute rush, the department has appealed to the tax payers to file their returns soon. Special counters have been set up in different parts of the city and around 22 tax preparers have been appointed to help the assessees in Pune circle comprising Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar and Thane, he said.

The preparers will charge Rs 250 per assessee and get one per cent commission on the tax collected from the department. Separate PAN verification counters have also been set up to verify the PAN before the return is filed.

''This year the post offices will not receive IT returns. Last year due to the strike, there were problems as many were inconvenienced,'' Mr Kumar said.

Talking about tax collections, he said collections were buoyant and were up by 50 per cent. Tax collections for FY 2006-07 were Rs 8,979 crore whereas the target fixed for FY 2007-08 is Rs 10,576 crore.

The tax collections upto June are Rs 1,860 crore, while the same last year were Rs 1,183 crore, an increase of 57.2 per cent.

Corporate advance tax collections have also registered an increase of 25 per cent, which stood at Rs 424.7 crore this year. The department has prepared CDs containing Tax Payers Education Series in English and Hindi versions, he informed.

The department has made special arrangements of tea and snacks for the taxpayers,'' Mr Kumar added.
