Flood water enters 700 villages, leaves 21 dead in Bihar

Patna, Jul 25 (UNI) The flood situation in Bihar continued to remain grim today as more than 700 villages were inundated by the swollen rivers leaving 21 people dead and affecting millions so far.

According to available reports, one person died in West Champaran district today as the boat carrying him capsized in flood water of the swollen Gandak, while the other 14 met a watery grave in the river in Bhagalpur district on Tuesday.

In another incident in Bhagalpur district, an old man was swept away by the flood water at Puccamool village near Khalkhalia embankment of the Chanan river on Monday last.

Reports confirmed four children, including a two-year-old girl were drowned as they fell into a waterlogged ditch at Rajendranagar area on Tuesday.

The flood water affected more than 700 villages disrupting all means of communication.

Sources at the Central Water Commission said the Punpun, Budhi Gandak, Bagmati, Kosi, Mahananda and Adhwara rivers were flowing above the danger level, while the Ganga, Son, Ghaghra, Gandak and Kamlabalan kept rising.

According to reports, the Punpun river was flowing 208 cms above the danger level at Sripalpur in Patna district following which several villages in and around the capital were flooded.

The Budhigandak was flowing 98 cms above the red mark in Lalbagiya ghat, Bagmati 44 cms above the danger level in Benibad, Adhwara group of rivers were above 107 cms in Kamtaul, 46 cms above in Kosibaltara and 26 cms above in Basua while Mahananda was flowing 10 cms above the red level in Dhengraghat, reports stated.

According to reports received here hundreds of villages were inundated in Madhubani, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Darbhanga and Purnea districts affecting millions of people.
