Fidayeen attack on CRPF camp foiled in JK

Srinagar, July 26: Alert Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) guards today foiled a fidayeen (suicide) attack on their camp on the outskirts of the summer capital, when they gunned down two heavily armed militants.

Four CRPF personnel were also injured in the attack.

A CRPF spokesman told sources that the two fidayeen, reportedly assisted by another, made an unsuccessful attempt to storm the camp of 42 battalion headquarters housed in Bhaba Atomic Research Centre building at Zakoora, about 13 km from here Srinagar- Baltal, Amarnath base camp.

As the two militants armed with automatic weapons and grenades tried to enter the camp from the rear side, alert guards challenged them at 1015 hours.

The militants opened fire before hurling hand grenades. CRPF guards also retaliated and in the ensuing the encounter one of the militants was killed near the fence of the camp while another was killed when he tried to hide himself in the grass.

A senior security force officer said four CRPF personnel were also injured. However, another report said six jawans were injured, one of them critically.

This is the first fidayeen attack in the city this year.
