New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) The Delhi government today announced the setting up of a committee to look into the feasibility of the introduction of Km scheme in Delhi to solve the public transport crisis.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The committee, headed by the Delhi Chief Secretary and comprising Transport Commissioner R Chandra Mohan and Principal Secretary (UD) Rakesh Mehta, would look into the feasibility of operating existing bluelines on the KM scheme as was the case a few years ago, and submit a report to the government by next week.

Talking to reporters after the Cabinet meet, which was also attended by Transport Minister Haroon Yousuf, the Chief Minister said all aspects of the issue would be considerd before taking a final decision on the issue.

She said the KM scheme had been discontinued a few years ago due to corruption that had crept in it. On the argument that converting the buses to KM scheme would lead to reduction in accidents, she said the buses running under the scheme had also been reported to be involved in several accidents.

On the public transport crisis in Delhi, Ms Dikshit said it would be resolved by early next week with the entire fleet of bluelines expected to be checked at fitness centre of the DTC by Sunday.

Meanwhile, the situation somewhat improved today with nearly 1500 bluelines joining the transport fleet.

And, with 253 out of 364 bluelines declared fit today, 1826 of these buses would ply from tomorrow on the roads, further improving the situation.
