New Delhi, July 26 (UNI) A day after first woman President Pratibha Patil assumed charge, the All India Mahila Congress came out strongly in favour of 33 per cent reservation for women in state assemblies and Parliament.

Congratulating Congress President Sonia Gandhi on playing a crucial role in nominating a woman as the candidate of the ruling coalition for Presidential poll, a resolution of the National Council of the Mahila Congress today pledged full trust in the efforts of Ms Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in getting the Women's Reservation Bill passed.

The resolution was adopted after Ms Gandhi delivered a valedictory address at the two-day meeting of the National Council today.

Expressing concern over the growing incidents of crimes against women, the resolution demanded more stringent laws to wage an effective fight against social evils.

The meeting pledged to work hard to ensure absolute majority to the Congress Party in 2009 general elections.
