Port Blair, Jul 26 (UNI) In a joint operation, the Coast Guard and Andaman Police have apprehended 14 Myanmarese poachers from Long Island, officials said here today.

The Coast Guard Ship Kanaklata Barua with 63 Indian Reserve Battalion jawans were sent for anti-poaching operation in which 14 Myanmarese poachers have been apprehended, Commandant Akshay Jain told UNI today.

The Long Island in North Andaman region lies 193 km away from Cape Negrais in Myanmar.

The Coast Guard Ship Kanaklata Barua arrived here yesterday and handed over all the poachers to police for further action.

However, on Monday last a few poachers had managed to escape in the thick and dense mangrove jungle, Andaman Superintendent of Police Ashok Chand said.

Mr Chand said the Police team apprehended a dinghy boat used by the poachers and sought for thorough combing operation keeping in view the large area.

The Coast Guard Ship Kanaklata Barua arrived and anchored off Long Island on July 24 and then cordoned the seaward area and commenced barrier patrolling off Long Island to close all the exit points.
