APW plans anti-ULFA rally;Security beefed up for 'Martyrs' Day'
Guwahati, July 26 (UNI) The Asom Public Works (APW) has planned to hold agitation against the ULFA-sponsored violence, while a tight security bandobast has been taken to thwart any subversive acts of the banned outfit on its 'Martyrs' Day' tomorrow.
Unprecedented security arrangements have been made, especially in two most vulnerable places - Guwahati and Tinsukia - with security forces setting up random check points, intensifying frisking and enhancing patrolling.
Spotters and security personnel have been deployed in various towns, especially in Upper Assam, while round-the-clock vigil was being maintained in vulnerable places like oil installations, public places, railway establishments and markets.
A senior police official said more men in civvies have been deployed than in uniform.
On July 23, top Army commanders had reviewed the situation in Asom in the Army's Tezpur base in view of the ULFA's 'Martyr's Day'.
Army sources said two terrorists, who were arrested with explosives in Upper Asom's Tinsukia, had disclosed that the ULFA was preparing to strike at various places on its 'Martyrs Day' and the seized explosives were meant to be used by the outfit on the day.
Another rebel, who was arrested with 10 kg explosives at Dibrugarh two days ago, also said he was instructed to explode the bomb tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Asom Public Works would be staging a sit-in protest and organise a rally to protest the ULFA sponsored violence.
APW leader Abhijeet Sarma said the family members of those were either killed of abducted by the ULFA would be demanding justice through the programmes.
The organisation, known to be a staunch opposer of the banned outfit, would also demonstrate against the state government's failure to compensate the victims of ULFA mayhem.
''We will seek an answer from the ULFA regarding the killings and abductions carried out by it,'' Sarma added.
