2 ultras killed, 8 CRPF personnel injured in foiled fidayeen attack
Srinagar, July 26 (UNI) A fidayeen (suicide) attack on a battalion headquarter of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was foiled by alert guards when they gunned down two militants before they could storm the camp building.
Eight CRPF personnel were also injured in the attack, first in this year.
CRPF spokesman said a Manas Ranjan told UNI that a group of two fidayeen tried to enter the battalion headquarter of 42 CRPF, housed in Bhaba Atomic Research Centre building at Zakoora, about 13 km from here on Srinagar- Baltal, Amarnath base camp at 1000 hrs.
He said there was a loud grenade blast on the back side of the camp which was followed by heavy firing from AK 47 rifles.
The sentry in the bunker immediately reacted and returned the fire after alerting other guards.
He said one of militant rushed towards the bunker where there was a hole in the boundary wall which was under construction and tried to gain entry into the camp. The guards shot him dead near the wall before he could enter the camp from the hole.
Another militant, taking advantage of plants and orchards, also rushed towards the boundary wall firing indiscriminately.
However, he too was gunned down near the boundary wall, he said.
Senior CRPF and police officials later visited the camp.
Two AK rifles, eight magazines, two pouches, four grenades and ten rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
Mr Ranjan said three CPRF personnel were injured in the encounter.
Superintendent of Police (operations) said eight CRPF personnel were injured in the foiled fidayeen attack.
He identified the injured personnel as Manoj Trivedi, Vinod Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Mohammad Salim, Altaf Hussain, Rajesh Sharma, Kalti Kumar and Sudesh Trivedi. The injured were hospitalised.
