Woman to be reunited with husband after HC's intervention

New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) The Delhi High Court has ordered the reunion of a woman with her husband who was put in solitary confinement by her parents following her marriage to a Muslim.

Hearing a writ petition moved by Meraj Ahmad, the husband of the woman, a Division Bench headed by Justices Mukul Mudgal and P K Bhasin ordered that ''she is free to go wherever she pleased.'' When she told the judges that she wanted to stay with her husband, the judges agreed. They, however, asked her to reiterate the statement before the court and her parents on January 14, 2008 when she appears in the court again.

The Petitioner moved the High Court on June 22 and filed a Habeas Corpus writ petition, praying the court to get his wife, Aanchal, alias Hamida, freed from the confinement of her parents.

Aanchal and Meraj had got married before the Magistrate on May 3 this year and willingly embracing Islam, she became Hamida, according to the petition.

However, her parents remained steadfast in their opposition to the marriage, the petition added.

Meraj accused the woman's parents of conniving with the police to put her in solitary confinement.

The petition added that Aanchal's parents also tried to implicate Meraj in criminal cases.
