Rain waterlogging throws normal life out of gear in Patna

Patna, July 25 (UNI) Continued torrential rains in the state capital has disrupted normal life in the city with overflowing drains and nullahs making the situation bad to worse.

Following heavy rains, several low lying areas in Patna have become waterlogged, causing hardships to the people.

Local MET office here said 42 mm of rainfall was recorded in the city today and more showers during the next 24 hours has been forecast as the sky continued to remain overcast.

Meanwhile, waterlogging in the state capital and the pathetic attitude of the concerned authorities led to the death of a minor girl when she slipped into an open ditch in Kankerbagh colony.

The low lying areas of Patel Nagar, Patliputra Colony and Sri Krishna Nagar had been waterlogged upto knee level. Acute scarcity of electricity and drinking water had thrown normal life out of gear.

There has been strong protest by the residents of the Sri Krishna Nager due to noncooperative attitude of the concerned authorities.

''No action had been taken by the authorities, although the High Court has ordered Patna Muncipal Corporation to provide relief in the waterlogged areas,'' Mr M K singh, a resident from S K Nagar, said.

The work on road widening, flyover and drainage construction near Chiraiyatarpul is always a cause of congestion and traffic jam.

The continued rainfall has made the situation more chaotic with increasing difficulties being faced by office-goers, school childern and pedestrians.

The open manholes and ditches filled with rain water during the hours of heavy downpour pose a great danger for childern as well as light vehicles.

The threat of water borne diseases such as malaria, typhoid and diarrhoea looms large as it is very common in the city after such situations.
