Mumbai, July 25 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has banned the entry of elephants into the city after reviewing a report, submitted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), highlighting the cruelty endured by the animals and its harmful impact on human health, life and property in cities.

The order was passed by Chief Conservator of Forests (Thane Circle) Shree Bhagwan yesterday after a sustained and prolonged campaign by PETA and celebrities. In the petition, celebrities like Dilip Kumar, John Abraham, Priya Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Mahesh Bhatt and Yana Gupta had asked Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to ban the entry of elephants into the city.

''All elephants in Mumbai are without a valid ownership certificate and will be asked to leave the city,'' said Mr Bhagwan.

PETA also pointed out the violations of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Performing Animals (Registration) Rule, 2001, Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, and the Bombay Police Act with regard to the importation and use of elephants in the metropolis.

PETA's chief functionary Anuradha Sawhney said ''The order is progressive and sets the standard for other governments to emulate.'' ''We commend the government for their foresight, initiative and kindness,'' she added.
