K'taka produced 7883 tonnes of raw silk last year

Bangalore, July 25 (UNI) Karnataka, the highest producer of raw silk, has produced 7883 metric tonne of raw silk during 2006-07 Karnataka Legislative Council was informed here today.

In reply to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP member Ms Shobha Karandlaje the Sericulture Minister Mr S Shivanna informed the house that the state had exported silk fabric and products worth over Rs 977 crore during the same period, The government had taken several measures to improve the quality of the silk being produced in the state, he said.

He also informed that during 2005-06 as many as 8383 mt of raw silk was imported into the country and it is likely to rise further following an amendment to Central Silk Board Act by the Union Government, which would come into force shortly, he said.
