Industrial consumers of 5 KW load to switch over to CFL

Chandigarh, July 25 (UNI) The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam has decided that all the existing consumers of industrial or commercial category having load more than 5 KW will have to switch over to Compact Florescent Lamps (CFLs) instead of old incandescent bulbs.

An official spokesman said it had been observed that illumination equal to standard incandescent lamps could be obtained from CFLs of about 20 to 25 per cent wattage.

The rated life of the CFL could be 5 to 10 times longer than that of incandescent lamps, he said.

''Therefore, CFLs can save as much as 70 to 80 per cent of electricity used for lighting. Replacing one ordinary bulb with a CFL would result in annual savings of about Rs. 283 for a consumer,'' he added.

It had also been decided that the owner of tent houses would be inspired to use CFLs of 15 W and 20 W while making lighting arrangements for marriages, melas, circus and other functions.

This would benefit in the shape of load drawn from the system thereby reducing their electricity bills besides having standby generators of lesser capacity. This arrangement would be lesser diesel consuming and also friendly for the environment, he added.

He said that the Nigam would allow temporary connection after obtaining the undertaking from the applicant that CFLs would be used in place of incandescent lamps and verification of the same be carried out at the time of release of connection.

He stated that the Nigam would launch a publicity campaign through print and electronic media to educate the people to make optimum use of electricity and use energy conserving gadgets.
