Chennai, July 25 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government has launched a crack down on self-financing medical and engineering colleges in the state, following collection of capitation fee for admitting students.

As students and parents complained that some of the self-financing professional colleges had demanded capitation fee ranging from Rs three lakh to Rs seven lakh for admission, a team of officials from the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) were conducting surprise checks at the colleges.

A day after the surprise checks at the St Joseph's College of Engineering in the city and the King Engineering College in Namakkal yesterday, officials of DOTE and Medical Department visited the Sri Venkateswara Engineering College at Sriperumbudur and the Chettinad Medical College here today and conducted checks.

Sources said the team members verified college ledgers, fee receipts and other relevant documents. The officials were expected to submit their report to the government in a week.

After Dr S Ramadoss, founder-leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), a key ally of the ruling DMK, demanded action against self- financing colleges collecting exorbitant fees, the State Government had constituted four committees to monitor collection of fees by the engineering colleges and two committes for the medical colleges.
