CPM to launch 'land struggle' in all states : Karat

Hyderabad, July 25 (UNI) With the people's positive response on 'land struggle' launched in Andhra Pradesh by CPI(M) recently, the party's General Secretary Prakash Karat today announced that the party would a launch nationwide 'land struggle' in the country, demanding that the state governments distribute lands and house sites to the poor.

Participating in a public meeting here, where the CPI(M), CPI and other outfits of the Left party leaders launched indefinite hunger strike, Mr Karat said 'his party was committed to solve the long pending demands of the poor by providing agricultural lands and house sites'. It would be possible only by organising agitations and exert pressure on the state govenrments'.

Alleging that the Rajasekhara Reddy government was not conceding the demands of the Left parties in the state, he appealed to the state government to take up the Left's demands and respond positively.

Urging the state government not to adopt negative attitude on land issue, Mr Karat said 'the demands raised by the Left parties were mentioned in the Congress manifesto during the 2004 assembly elections'.

Observing that during his meeting with the Chief Minister in New Delhi, he advised him to meet the Left leaders and solve the land issue, the CPM leader said unfortunately, the recent talks between the government and Left parties were not fruitful because there is no positive response from the government.

Mr Karat alleged that the state government and Congress leaders were indulging in mudslinging against the CPI(M)-ruled West Bengal government on land reforms in the state.

The West Bengal government has successfully implmented the land reforms by distributing lands to all poor.
