Rs 56 cr JK tourism development proposal pending with Centre

Srinagar, July 24 (UNI) A Jammu and Kashmir government proposal of about Rs 56 crore to fund development of infrastructure at various tourist places in the Valley was still pending with the Centre, officials said today.

The officials were speaking at a high-level meeting convened here by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to review the progress on tourism infrastructure projects taken up in Kashmir and Ladakh regions.

Mr Azad reviewed the construction projects under implementation through development authorities in Kashmir and Ladakh regions.

The meeting was told that state government had sent to the Centre for approval several funding proposals for development of infrastructure projects in the Kashmir valley.

These include tourist facilities worth Rs 6.47 crore at Sonamarg, Rs 27.51 crore in Gulmarg, Rs 3.13 crore at Pahalgam, Rs 13.32 crore in Kokernag and Achhabal and Rs 4.92 crore at Wullar-Manasbal.

Some infrastructure development projects under implementation include construction of a 'yatri niwas', a club, a youth hostel and a family and children's park at Sonamarg, upgrade of golf course, development of Kongdoori as an international ski destination and Botapathri as a camping site in Gulmarg.

Remodeling of a golf course, development of Betab Valley and construction of drainage system at Pahalgam, development of club park and pine view hill park at Kokernag, development of tourist facilities in and around Leh and Kargil towns, face-lifting of Manasbal tourist resort, restoration and upgrade of ancient temple at Manasbal, fencing of an Eco park and construction of wooden huts at Doodpathri, and development of tourist facilities at Verinag, Kokernag and Yusmarg were some other projects.

The Chief Minister asked forest and revenue departments to extend necessary help to the authorities in the implementation of infrastructure projects and removal of all bottlenecks.

He also asked the officials of development authorities to speed up completion of ongoing projects and initiation of new ones.

Mr Azad said apart from previously set up development authorities of Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, the new ones created in Kashmir and Ladakh regions should also be taken up in right earnest.

As part of infrastructure building at Doodpathri and Bungus, the Chief Minister asked the officials to construct pre-fabricated double room huts and set up tented accommodation in next two months.

Helicopter service for the two destinations would also be explored to promote these as attractive tourist places, he added.

Mr Azad said the task force on tourism would monitor and review progress on infrastructure development. The task force was one of the nine set up by the state government recently to speed up work on infrastructure related projects in various departments. The task force would brief the Ministers concerned every month and the state Cabinet once in two months about the progress on each project, the Chief Minister added.
