Punjab to start State Public Health Institute in Mohali

Chandigarh July 24 (UNI) The Punjab Government will start State Public Health Institute (SPHI) in Mohali district to provide training and research programmes for better improvement in public health sector in the state.

This was stated by Punjab Chief Secretary S Ramesh Inder Singh in a meeting with Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) here today. PHFI was represented by its president Dr Srinath Reddy and Chief Operating Officer S Ravichandran.

In the meeting, the Chief Secretary assured that Punjab Government would provide adequate land near Mullanpur in Mohali district for the purpose. The Government would also provide professional services at the institute for the training and research purposes for the students and employees related to the public health sector, he added.

The Chief Secretary asked the PHFI to evolve a special quota for Punjab domicile students for different courses to be conducted by the institute.

He directed the foundation to set up the institute in a time bound manner and put up the schedule of implementation of the project to the state government at the earliest.

In the meeting PHFI president said the PHFI, which was conceptualised as a response to the emerging health challenges in the country, would established schools of public health and enhance the capacity of existing multiple institution agencies with convergent interests.

The core area of PHFI's intervention would include strengthening public health research, training, translating research, advocacy and programme development, he added.

Mr Reddy further informed that the State Public Health Institute would provide courses like Master in Public Health, Diploma in Public Health, certificate courses and short term training programmes.
