DoNER to mobilise Northeast region through international assistance

New Delhi, July 24 (UNI) The Ministry for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) has taken the initiative for mobilising international assistance for the North Eastern Region (NER) in important sector.

According to official sources, some of these projects include North Eastern Urban Development Project (NEUDP). Under this the NEUDP phase I seeks to improve urban infrastructure in five capital Cities, Agartala, Aizawl, Gangtok, Kohima and Shillong. The Ministry has requested the five project States to carefully consider the reforms agenda proposed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The ADB's technical assistance for the NEUDP phase- II covering Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar and Dirbugar is also scheduled.

The other one is for the North Eastern States Trade investment Creation Initiative Project (NESTICIP).

The project seeks to develop a trade and investment framework that will enable North Eastern India to better position itself to participate in global and regional markets and to reap the considerable gains form specialisation, agglomeration economics and globalisation.

A draft report has been prepared and has been circulated to the States and Central Ministries for their comments.

The World Bank (WB) will be funding a project on Natural Resources, Water and Environemnt Nexus for Development and growth.

The objectjective of the study is to develop a vision for the development and management of water and related natural resource/environmental issues in the NER for sustainable and equitable growth.

Apart from this the DoNER have initiated discussions with the WB on the feasibility of a NER Livelihoods Project (NERLP).

The project is based on the IFAD assisted NER Community Resource Management Project (NERCTMP) which has been successfully implemented in the districts each of Meghalaya, Asom and Manipur.

A preliminary project report for NERLP was prepared by the Ministry in consultation with the Planning Commission and referred to the World Bank through DEA.

The WB has since agreed to develop and assist in implementation of the proposed project. It has fielded a Mission in December last, to carry out a preliminary assessment and develop the project, the sources added.
