Guwahati, Jul 24 (UNI) The splinter faction of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), AGP (Progressive)(AGP-P)- today reacted positively to a reunification bid by the mother party.

Talking to reporters here, AGP-P general secretary Rupam Kakoty said the AGP-P would consider reunification with the mother party if the AGP is serious about the bid.

AGP, the main Opposition party in the state, in its General Council meeting on Sunday, decided to launch a renewed bid to bring back all leaders who had left the party since its formation in 1985 in a bid to give Asom a proper Opposition party.

The AGP has two splinter parties, the AGP(P) and the Trinamool Gana Parishad(TGP). This new bid is intended to rope in all those leaders and groups which had veered away from the main party.

The AGP(P) is led by two-time former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who was also the founder-president of the AGP. He had deserted the party, following his defeat in the past presidential election to incumbent Brindabon Goswami.

The AGP's recent bid to bring back the former colleagues back to the party fold was well received by the AGP(P) with its general secretary saying that if the AGP approached it with a positive stand, the AGP(P) would also respond with an open-mind.

''A demand for reunification of the AGP factions had been mounting as the Opposition was losing its relevance in the state in the absence of an united Opposition,'' he said.
